Skin Cancer Cream Treatment Feverfew Overview

Efudex (other brand names include Carac and Fluoroplex) is a traditional method used in the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinomas, such as multiple lesions or difficult treatment areas on the face or scalp. It is also used to treat Keratosis actinic (also called solar keratosis), which can lead to more serious invasive squamous cell carcinoma if not treated.

Efudex is a chemotherapy drug (an “antimetabolite”) that prevents the formation of DNA and RNA required for cell division and growth. This inhibition results in the death of rapidly growing cancer cells, which absorb more fluorouracil than healthy cells. In its most potent injectable form, fluorouracil is also used to treat cancers of the breast, stomach, intestine, and esophagus.

The success of basal cell carcinoma treated with fluorouracil was approximately 93 percent, based on the study of 113 lesions in 54 patients. However, isolated, easily accessible basal cell carcinomas should be treated with surgical treatment, as the success achieved with such lesions is about 100 percent. Unlike surgery, Efudex is unlikely to leave scars or permanently discolored skin blemishes.

Other studies are now investigating how effective the efudex cream is in the faceless areas of the body, and how fluorouracil is compared with Imiquimod cream (Aldara) and cryosurgery. For example, in a German study with an actinic keratosis patient, treatment with imiquimod compared to cryosurgery and fluorouracil resulted in better clearance of the lesions and improved cosmetic results. Talk to your doctor about which treatment is best for you.

Skin Cancer Cream Treatment Feverfew Uses

For basal cell carcinoma, it is recommended to apply 5% fluorouracil cream twice a day to cover lesions for at least 3 to 6 weeks. However, therapy may be required for a period of 10-12 weeks without the disappearance of lesions. To apply for this medication, use a cotton tipped applicator or use gloves when applied with fingertips. When applied with unprotected fingertips, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly after applying for this medicine. Avoid applying to eyes, nose or mouth.

Skin Cancer Cream Treatment Feverfew Side Effects

In general, the treated areas may not be noticeable for several weeks after treatment and usually after discontinuation of treatment. The fluorouracil effect occurs in four stages:

Early inflammatory phase: slight inflammation occurs in the first week of the application.
Inflammatory phase: Redness and swelling occur in the following weeks with some wounds and burns.
Tumor disintegration stage: Lesions dissolve as skin excretion.
Healing phase: more than 1 to 2 weeks, the new skin grows in the treatment area.
Generally, certain side effects that do not require medical attention (if it persists or tells your doctor or health care professional if you are annoying) include:

  • Red or dark skin
  • Erosion (loss of upper skin layer)
  • Eye irritation such as burning, itching, tenderness, stinging or watering
  • Increased skin sensitivity to the sun and ultraviolet light
  • Pain and burning in the affected area
  • Drying, shedding or swelling of the affected area
  • Rash, itching of the affected area sensitivity

  • Measures and interactions

Efudex cream should not be used by women who are pregnant or are thinking of being pregnant or breastfeeding because they may harm the fetus. Since there are serious side effects, dihydropyridine dehydrogenase (DPD) should not be used if you have an enzyme deficiency. DPD is a hereditary condition that occurs in 3 to 5 percent of the population and requires special genetic testing for diagnosis. Also, tell your doctor:

Subject to radiation therapy: Previously, he had unusual or allergic reactions to fluorouracil, other chemotherapy, other drugs, foods, dyes or preservatives.
Keep Efudex as far away from sunlight as possible because it may increase its side effects. If you are exposed to sunlight, wear a hat and use sunscreen. As always, also avoid tanning booths that are clearly linked to squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.
